Diwali is among the most celebrated festivals in India with folks meeting their near and dear ones, exchanging pleasantries, sweets, lighting candles and putting lights within their home and office. People also enjoy involving in their favorite past time of bursting numerous crackers.
But this year was actually a completely different story. An extremely different Diwali actually.
Diwali without crackers? Irresistible. Unbelievable. Unimaginable. Dull and boring indeed. Diwali without crackers meant Diwali without fun and frolic. Diwali without any excitement. Diwali without any festive sentiment.
This is exactly what I felt initially when i first heard of Supreme Court’s announcement on banning crackers in Delhi and Northern Capital Region area on account of high amounts of pollution proficient in recent years.
Since time immemorial, buying selection of crackers worth a large number of rupees and lighting them on happy diwali images has been such as a must to get followed ritual, a fervent tradition thus making Diwali a function most looked forward to every year. To include in our nation’s obsession, it seemed to be catching attention and fascination of individuals of varied age ranges along with an part of curiosity for growing children.
Lighting crackers is synonymous to being considered auspicious, an optimistic emotion in our Society. These colorful and glamorous crackers are not just used during Diwali in India but in addition on all major festivals and celebrations. These could be New Year Celebrations, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Ganpati Festival, Durga Puja, India winning Cricket match, Weddings, Baby Shower etc. To put it briefly, we as Indians just need reasons to light crackers all the time and celebrate the occasion with pomp and show.
Like a lot of my buddies, relatives and colleagues, I too felt Diwali will be really boring this time around missing out on the primary fun element. However, I had to change my prospective when the actual Diwali day approached. To my surprise, I didn’t miss bursting crackers at all as the day progressed.
Of course, my entire family had gathered momentum with cleaning rituals. Cleaning of house and household objects was completed a day ahead of time. Finally, on Diwali day, most of us gathered at our parent’s place. Our family enjoyed munching on sumptuous eatables straight from morning hours. These included sweets, dry fruits and various tempting delicacies adding the unwanted calories. Greetings and reciprocation on phone calls, sms messages, whats app were followed by visiting our neighbors and family friends.
This time, surprisingly, unlike previous Diwali days, we had couple of hours on account of ban. Next, we wondered what exactly do we all do and just how should we utilize this idle time constructively?
Celebrating Diwali with not too privileged class of society simply by making this festival special and memorable for them. So, I along with my family decided to go to a near by school run with a Non-Governmental Organization and then went along to an Orphanage. We got few gifts for that children on our way to School and Orphanage. We interacted with all the kids and distributed cookies, sweets and cakes to each and every child. We really enjoyed talking to them and knowing their future goals. It had been an enjoyable moment and a very satisfying experience.
Looking at their constant struggles, sorrows and hardships, we felt our life was extremely comfortable, convenient and blessed. Thereafter, I started valuing my life and extending gratitude to God and my parents for that wonderful upbringing and exquisite life they have provided to everyone.
From your enriching and eye-opening experience, I took a pledge of contributing somehow to the society immediately especially to these children, who are going to be our next generation. I spoke for their in-charge and as per their requirements, decided to volunteer and begin teaching them English for the hour one or more times per week. It had been definitely a life changing and self-realization moment for me personally.
Obviously, the latter half of the day saw us praying towards the deity, lighting lamps and candles. This happy diwali images was different neither expected nor anticipated for. It had been quite meaningful with large amount of introspection evhznm in addition to long term goal setting without the regrets. Lighting or otherwise not lighting crackers actually lost significance following this experience as I achieved a purpose in life. I felt such as a responsible citizen with this country.
If only I had this self-awakening much earlier in life so that you can contribute positively for the poor and needy people thereby enhancing their life with right skills and knowledge. And I am happy to remain this zone of life. I hope the enthusiasm continues till I am just alive and I’m able to work effectively towards this goal having a positive mindset and right group of values. This year’s Diwali was certainly quite special, spectacular and amazing and will always remain so inside the many years to come. Thanks to Supreme Court for any life changing and unique experience. Must say, crackers ban became a boon for the rest of my life.
